1814‐54 The third king of the Kamehameha Dynasty of the Kingdom of Hawaii. He was the son of King Kamehameha the Great and the younger brother of the previous king, Kamehameha II. He ascended to the throne upon the death of the previous king, and his reign (1825-54) lasted for almost 30 years, making him the longest of any king in the Kingdom of Hawaii's history. It was during his reign that Hawaii became a constitutional kingdom and a representative parliament was established. He issued a constitution in 1840 and established the capital in Honolulu in 1845. He also established the legislative, administrative, and judicial systems to give it the appearance of a modern state, and carried out the Great Mahele (mahele means "division" in Hawaiian), which opened up land ownership rights, which had previously been the monopoly of the king, to the general public.
