Seven Buddhas of the Past

〘Noun〙 Buddhist term. The Buddhas of the past who appeared before Shaka Nyorai appeared in the world. A collective term for the seven Buddhas: Vibashi Buddha, Shiki Buddha, Bishabu Buddha, Kuroson Buddha , Kunagamuni Buddha, Kashyapa Buddha , and Shakyamuni Buddha. Shakyamuni Buddha is a Buddha in the present, but it is thought that this was added based on the later idea that he has already passed away and belongs to the past. 〘名〙仏語。釈迦如来が世に現われるまでに出た過去の仏。毘婆尸仏(びばしぶつ)、尸棄仏(しきぶつ)、毘舎浮仏(びしゃぶぶつ)、拘留孫仏(くるそんぶつ)、倶那含牟尼仏(くながんむにぶつ)、迦葉仏(かしょうぶつ)、釈迦牟尼仏(しゃかむにぶつ)の七仏の総称。釈迦牟尼仏は現在仏であるが、すでに入滅して過去に属しているとする後代の考え方によって加えられたと思われる。過去仏(かこぶつ)。※古今著聞集（1254）五「和歌の曼陀羅を図絵して、過去七仏を書たてまつり、又卅六人の名字をかきあらはせり」〔観仏三昧経‐一〇〕
