…In the 19th century, investments by major bankers and traders such as Lafite, Rothschild, and Péreire flourished, and most of the chateaux seen today were built around this time. The 1855 Paris World's Fair was used as an opportunity to classify Bordeaux wines, and the first-class red wines were dominated by Haut Brion from the Graves region, Lafite, Margaux, and Latour from the Médoc region (with Mouton Rothschild joining in 1973). This five-class classification has remained almost unchanged to this day. …
