Ceramic artist. Born in Kyoto City. His father was the ceramic artist Yagi Isso (Eiji). After graduating from Kyoto Municipal School of Art, he became an apprentice at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry's Ceramic Testing Institute. In 1946, he participated in the establishment of the Young Potters' Group, but left in 1948 to form the Sodeisha group, which played a leading role in the avant-garde ceramic world. He experimented with purely three-dimensional sculptures without considering purpose or function, and was highly acclaimed overseas. His representative work is Mr. Samsa's Walk (1954). He has been a professor in the ceramics department at Kyoto City University since 1971, and was responsible for the design of the prize medals for the Sapporo Olympics together with Tanaka Ikko.
