Greek name usually given to the anonymous author of Peri Hypsus (On the Sublime). Probably a rhetorician from the mid-1st century. Peri Hypsus is the greatest literary critique of antiquity, and discusses what constitutes the "sublime" in literature, arguing that it consists of great ideas and strong emotions, supplemented by artistic composition and noble language, qualities that give dignity and elevation. It illustrates this with abundant quotations from classical literature, and compares the Iliad and the Odyssey, and Demosthenes and Cicero. The author cites Homer, Plato, and Demosthenes as exemplars of the sublime style.
