Japanese: キンランチョウ(金蘭鳥) - キンランチョウ(英語表記)red‐bishop
Red-Bishop of Japan - Red-Bishop of Japan
A passerine bird of the Weaverbird family (illustration). It is smaller than a sparrow, with a total length of about 13 cm. Sexes are heterochromatic. The male's reproductive plumage is reddish orange overall, with a black face and abdomen, and brown wings and tail. There is an orange collar-like ornament on the hind neck. In non-reproductive plumage, males and females are similar, with a light yellow-brown body with scattered dark vertical stripes. It is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa. It is often found in grasslands near water, where it feeds on grass seeds. It can appear in large flocks on cultivated land, causing great damage to crops. It breeds in groups on grasslands and reed beds, and males are highly territorial, displaying by ruffling their neck ornaments and hovering in the air while making a buzzing sound.
