Waterloo - Waterloo (English spelling)

A city in Walloon Brabant in central Belgium, famous for its historic battlefields. Population 28,898 (2002). La Belle Alliance, 4.8 km southeast of the city, is the site where the combined forces of Wellington's British army and Blücher's Prussian army faced off against Napoleon's French army at the Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815, resulting in the decisive defeat of Napoleon's army. There is an observation deck overlooking the hilly area dotted with farms, and a memorial museum displaying wax figures. It is a residential and villa area for commuters to the capital, Brussels.

ベルギー中部ブラバン・ワロン州にある、古戦場で有名な都市。人口2万8898(2002)。市の南東4.8キロメートルのラ・ベラリャーンスLa Belle Allianceは、1815年6月18日、ウェリントン率いるイギリス軍とブリュッヒャー率いるプロイセン軍の連合軍が、ナポレオンのフランス軍と対決し(ワーテルローの戦い)、ナポレオン軍の敗退を決定的にした場所。農場の点在する丘陵地帯を見晴らす展望台や蝋(ろう)人形などを展示する記念の博物館などがある。首都ブリュッセルへの通勤者の住宅地や別荘地となっている。
