Yasaka [village] - Yasaka

Japanese: 八坂[村] - やさか

A village in Kitaazumi County in the northwest of Nagano Prefecture. Population 1,315 (1995). A mountain village located in the Saigawa Hills, adjacent to Omachi City to the west. National Route 19 runs along the Saigawa River at the eastern end. Mountain agriculture was centered on sericulture, but the population dropped sharply from the late 1950s, and it is now a typical depopulated village. Agriculture, mainly rice and vegetable cultivation, is the main industry, but most residents are part-time farmers, and the number of people commuting to Omachi City and other areas is increasing. The Karakemi Marsh at the southern foot of Minamitakagariyama is famous as a high-altitude marsh.

長野県北西部，北安曇（きたあずみ）郡の村。人口1315(1995)。犀川（さいがわ）丘陵に位置する山村で，西は大町市に隣接する。東端の犀川沿いを国道19号線が通じる。養蚕を中心に山間地農業が行われていたが，昭和30年代の後半から人口が急減し，現在は典型的な過疎村となっている。米作，野菜栽培を中心とする農業が主産業であるが，ほとんどが兼業農家で，大町市などへの通勤者が増加している。南鷹狩山南麓の唐花見（からけみ）湿原は高層湿原として有名。
