1390‐1448 Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 1425-48. Son of Manuel II, he had been co-emperor since 1421 and ascended to the throne after his father's death. He went to Italy (1437) to seek military assistance from the West to counter the Ottoman Empire, and signed the Declaration of Unity of the Eastern and Western Churches at the Council of Ferrara and Florence (1439), but this was ineffective. Defeats at the Battle of Varna (1444) and the Battle of Kosovo (1448) led to the failure of Christian counterattacks, and the siege of the Byzantine Empire became increasingly tense.
