A Confucian physician from the mid-Edo period. He was from Himeji, Harima Province (Hyogo Prefecture). His pen name was Taichu, and he was known by the names Shuan and Ippondo. At the age of 18, he traveled to Kyoto to study medicine under Goto Konzan, a master of traditional medicine, and at the advice of his teacher, he studied Confucianism under Ito Jinsai. In five years, he had read all medical books, ancient and modern, and greatly spread the theories of traditional medicine. He advocated the theory that Confucian medicine is one and the same, and stressed that the holy path and medical art are originally one and the same. He tried to reject the theory of the five fortunes and six energy, and aimed to practice medicine based on experiments. He wrote books such as "Ippondo Yakusen" and "Ippondo Gyoyo Igen," and is said to have had over 400 disciples.
