sūtradhāra (English spelling) sutradhara

...One of the fragments of Ashvaghosha's plays discovered in Central Asia is called an allegorical play (or metaphorical drama), in which religious abstractions are personified and acted out. Later, Krishna Mishra (11th century) produced a six-act allegorical play called Prabodhacandrodaya (Moonrise of Enlightenment), which promoted the doctrine of Vaishnava, bringing a new style of drama into vogue in the theatre.
[actor]
In ancient Indian drama, female actors were extremely rare, and a troupe consisted of male and female actors. The head of the troupe (sūtradhāra) guided the actors and also appeared in the prologue himself to introduce the author and the contents of the play. The head's wife usually performed as an actress and also had to look after the troupe.
