American painter. Born in Wisconsin. Studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Converted to Baha'i Faith in 1918. In 1923 he began studying Chinese ink painting, and in 1934 studied Zen in China and Japan. Based on his unique view of the universe, he produced abstract paintings using white paint in what he called "white writing," in which thin lines reminiscent of calligraphy move freely through space. He also influenced Abstract Expressionist artists. One of his representative works is Cosmos (1949, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York).

米国の画家。ウィスコンシン州生れ。シカゴ美術研究所で学ぶ。1918年バハーイー教に改宗。1923年には中国の水墨画の研究を始め，1934年中国と日本で禅を修めた。その後独自の宇宙観にもとづいて，白い絵具を用い，カリグラフィーを思わせる細い線が空間を自在に往き来する〈ホワイト・ライティング（白の筆記）〉による抽象絵画を発表。抽象表現主義の作家たちにも影響を与えた。代表作に《宇宙》（1949年，ニューヨーク，ホイットニー美術館蔵）がある。
