Two sides - two faces

A technique of Kabuki directing. A ghost appears in the exact same costume as the lover of the person he hates, confuses those around, and finally reveals his true identity. Since the Noh play "Futari Shizuka" and Chikamatsu Monzaemon's Joruri "Akazomeemon Eiga Monogatari," this has been used in many plays, but in dance it has given rise to a series of plays called "two-sided plays" since the mid-Edo period. The representative work is the Tokiwazu play "Futaomotetsuki no Sugatae" (1798), which was created as an important dance drama for "Gonichi no Omokage of the Sumidagawa River" (Hokaibo), in which the two spirits of the murdered Hokaibo and Nowakehime combine and express their obsessions with their lovers, Okumi and Matsuwaka. Currently, it is performed under the title "Mizu Teru Tsuki" (The Two-sided Moon Shining Through the Water), and is generally referred to as "Two-sided," and is counted among the masterpieces of Tokiwazu dance. Other works with a similar theme include "Miyakodori Meisho no Watashi" (The Two Matsuwakas), an important piece in "Sumidagawa Hana Goshozome" (Onna Seigen, 1814), and "Dojoji Koi Hakusemono" (The Two-sided Dojoji), an important piece in "Kin no Zaisarushima Dari" (1829).

歌舞伎(かぶき)演出の一技法。亡霊が、恨む相手の恋人とまったく同じ扮装(ふんそう)で現れて周囲を惑わし、最後に正体を現す形式をいう。謡曲『二人静(ふたりしずか)』、近松門左衛門の浄瑠璃(じょうるり)『赤染衛門栄花(あかぞめえもんえいが)物語』以来、多くの戯曲に扱われたが、とくに舞踊では江戸中期以降「双面物」とよばれる一系列を生んだ。その代表作は、『隅田川続俤(ごにちのおもかげ)』（法界坊）の大切(おおぎり)舞踊劇としてつくられた常磐津(ときわず)『両面月姿絵(ふたおもてつきのすがたえ)』（1798）で、殺された法界坊と野分(のわけ)姫の二つの霊が合体し、それぞれ恋するおくみ・松若に執念を表すもの。現在では『双面水照月(みずにてるつき)』の名題(なだい)で上演され、普通、「双面」といえばこれをさすほどで、常磐津舞踊の名作に数えられている。ほかに『隅田川花御所染(はなのごしょぞめ)』（女清玄(おんなせいげん)、1814）の大切『都鳥名所渡(みやこどりめいしょのわたし)』（二人松若）、『金幣猿島郡(きんのざいさるしまだいり)』（1829）の大切『道成寺思恋曲者(こいはくせもの)』（双面道成寺）なども同様の趣向である。
