A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family (APG classification: Cyperaceae). It has a thick rhizome from which stems emerge in various places. It is 1 to 1.5 meters tall and the cross section of the stem is triangular. The leaf blades have degenerated, leaving only the leaf sheaths. It flowers from summer to autumn. It is distributed in Okinawa and China, and was introduced to Japan from the Satsunan Seven Islands (Tokara Islands) in the 1600s. It is cultivated in warm areas west of the Kanto region, and in some places it has become naturalized. Seedlings propagated from the rhizomes are planted in rice paddies, and the harvested stems are used to make tatami mats and flower mats. It is also used to make sandals and carrier bags.
