Soviet playwright. Opposed naturalism and realism, he emphasized portraying the inner self of humans. His representative work is Theatre of the Mind (V Kulisakh Dushi) (1912), subtitled "Monodrama," in which the various facets of a character's split self are played by several actors. Other works include The Inspector General (12), a burlesque that imagines what would happen if Gogol's The Inspector General were directed by Stanislavsky, M. Reinhardt, and G. Craig, and The Fourth Wall (15), a satirical comedy about a director who insists on the realism of theater and demands that a wall be built in front of the stage.
