The name of a place in Chuo Ward, Osaka City. In the Edo period, it referred to the area bounded by Nagahori River to the north, Dotonbori River to the south, Higashiyokobori River to the east, and Nishiyokobori River to the west. After the Summer Siege of Osaka, reconstruction began in 1615 under Matsudaira Tadaaki, lord of Osaka Castle, and development of the area by the Yasui and Hirano families progressed, with permission given to open entertainment venues and theaters. In 1703, there were nine towns with teahouses. Many were home to Kabuki actors, and by 1872, the number had risen to 24. In contrast to Senba, which was known as a place of commerce, this area was known as a place of style, and was also known by the nicknames Minami, Konan, Nanko, Nanshu, Nanyo, Yodai, and Kiyo. It is still a bustling downtown area of Minami today. → Related topics Osaka [city] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
