Kazuho Yoshida - Yoshida Issui

Poet. Born in Kamiiso-gun, Hokkaido. His real name was Yoshio. He dropped out of the English department at Waseda University. He published tanka in the literary magazine Seian, which earned him the recognition of Katakami Noburu. In May 1924 (Taisho 13), he published his first book, a collection of children's stories, Umi no Ningyo (Doll of the Sea). In November 1951, he released his first collection of poems, Umi no Seibo (Virgin Mother of the Sea), and in March 1955 (Showa 5), he released a collection of prose poems, Koen no Sho (Book of the Old Garden), establishing his position as a poet with a unique methodology. In his collection of poems, Haishiden (Hieshiden), published in December 1961, he attempted to create a "three-line poem with a strict ratio that follows the dialectical structure of haiku." This three-line poem that established the ego-universe was crystallized in the 15-chapter masterpiece Swan, which he created over a period of five years, starting in 1965. "The Big Star symbol disappears on the palm of my hand. / But this flower inside must bloom. / Sand spills behind me." (Swan, I). His other works include the poetry collection Mirai-sha (The Future Man) (1948), the poetry essay collection Kuroshio Kaiki (Return to the Black Current) (1941), and Kodai Ryokuchi (Ancient Green Spaces) (1958).
