Tadayoshi Sakurai - Tadayoshi Sakurai
Year of death: September 17, 1965
Year of birth: June 11, 1879
He was an army officer and military writer from the late Meiji to Showa periods. He was the third son of Sakurai Nobuyuki, a samurai of Matsuyama Domain (Ehime Prefecture). His elder brother Tendan was a literary critic, and his younger brother Tadatake was a naval vice admiral. He entered the Army Academy in 1900 after graduating from Matsuyama Middle School, and served in the Russo-Japanese War as a lieutenant. He was injured during the first general attack on Port Arthur and repatriated to the mainland, where he wrote "Nikudan" (Human Bullet), which made him instantly famous. As his right hand became disabled, he worked as an adjutant and attached to a unit, while publishing many short stories. In 1924, he became head of the Army Ministry's newspaper division, during which time he is said to have had the strong support of Tanaka Giichi. He left active duty as a major general in 1930, and thereafter devoted himself to writing and painting, earning him the nickname of the literary genius admiral Ogasawara Nagao. His many works include "Home Front," "National Defense Encyclopedia," "Biographical History of Japan," and "Complete Works of Sakurai Tadaharu."
