Metaphysical Poetry

Japanese: 形而上詩 - けいじじょうし（英語表記）Metaphysical Poetry

In a broad sense, it can refer to poetry of philosophical speculation (such as Lucretius's On the Nature of Things and Dante's Divine Comedy), but more specifically, it refers to poetry characterized by wit and conceit, written by a certain school of English poetry in the first half of the 17th century. This is the line of poetry that began with J. Donne, a poet and theologian of the late Elizabethan period, passed through G. Herbert and R. Crashaw, and reached A. Cowley (Cooley), H. Bourne, and A. Marvell during the Puritan Revolution.

広い意味では一般に哲学的思弁の詩(たとえばルクレティウスの《物の本質について》やダンテの《神曲》)をさすこともあるが，厳密には17世紀前半の英詩の一つの流派によって書かれた，機知と奇想conceitを特色とする詩を呼ぶ。すなわちエリザベス朝後期の詩人･神学者であったJ.ダンに始まり，G.ハーバート，R.クラショーらをへて，ピューリタン革命期のA.カウリー(クーリー)，H.ボーン，A.マーベルにいたる詩の流れである。
