This is one of the letters known as the "Public Epistles" in the New Testament. The author calls himself James (1:1), and some have suggested that this is a letter written by James, the brother of Jesus, but most scholars reject this. It was probably written by a Jewish Christian at the end of the 1st century or the beginning of the 2nd century. Its contents are more of a collection of lessons than a letter. It is well known that the 16th-century German reformer Luther called it the "Straw Epistle" because it emphasizes human actions, in contrast to Paul's emphasis on faith.

新約聖書中《公同書簡》と呼ばれる手紙の一つ。著者はみずからをヤコブと称しており(1：1)，そこからイエスの弟ヤコブの手紙とする説もあるが，大多数の学者はそれを否定する。おそらく1世紀末～2世紀初めに1人のユダヤ人キリスト者によって書かれたものと思われる。その内容は書簡というよりも，むしろ一種の教訓集といえる。パウロの信仰の強調に対して人間の行為を強調しているため，16世紀のドイツの宗教改革者ルターがこれを〈藁（わら）の書簡〉と呼んだことは有名である。
