Jacobsen, Jens Peter
Born: April 7, 1847, Tisted, Jutland
[Died] April 30, 1885. Thisted, Jutland. Danish novelist and poet. Born into a wealthy merchant family, his father was a strong sailor and businessman, and his mother was an artistic and dreamy person. He majored in botany at university, and was particularly devoted to collecting and studying algae, winning a gold medal for his graduation thesis. He was also devoted to Darwin's theory of evolution, and translated "On the Origin of Species" and "The Descent of Man." His faith became unstable around that time, and he became interested in Kierkegaard and Feuerbach, and eventually came to consider himself an atheist. Under the influence of Brandes, he turned to literature, and published works in the last years of his life, while battling tuberculosis for 12 years. His short story "Mogens," published in 1872, surprised the world with its fresh impressionistic touch, and he was quickly seen as a leader of the new literary movement. His representative works include Fru Marie Grubbe (1876), Niels Lyhne (80), and Fru Fønss (82).
