Themis - Themis (English spelling)

Themis - Themis (English spelling)

A goddess in Greek mythology. She was one of the Titans, and became the wife of Zeus, giving birth to Hora (seasons), Moira (fate), Eunomia (order), Dike (justice), and Eirene (peace). The birth of these anthropomorphic gods is probably a tale that shows the function of the supreme god Zeus. Some say she was the mother of Prometheus. Themis means "law, custom" and is the personification of that god, but is also thought to be another name for the earth (Gaia). It is said that Themis taught her son Prometheus that Zeus would win the battle between the Titans and Zeus, and persuaded the Titans to follow Zeus. Thus, although she belonged to the Titans, she became a member of the Olympian gods and the goddess of prophecy. It is said that Themis was the one who gave Apollo the art of prophecy, and that it was Themis who gave Apollo the oracle at Delphi until she was replaced by Apollo.
