1865‐1946 American politician and the first professional forester in the United States. Born in Connecticut. As Commissioner of the Forest Service in the Department of Agriculture from 1898 to 1910, he worked to prevent unchecked destruction of the environment by corporations and to protect the nation's natural resources. In 1908, he served as chairman of the National Land Conservation Committee. In 1909, he resigned due to a dispute over conservation policy with Secretary of the Interior Barringer. He founded the Pinchot School of Forestry at Yale University and taught there from 1903 to 1936. As Governor of Pennsylvania from 1923 to 1927 and from 1931 to 1935, he strengthened regulations on public utilities, which expanded the governor's powers.
