Firefly moth - Pidorus glaucopis

Japanese: ホタルガ(蛍蛾) - ホタルガ（英語表記）Pidorus glaucopis

An insect of the Zygaenidae family of the Lepidoptera order. Its wingspan is about 4.5cm. The body and wings are black, and the head is red. There is a white band on the forewings. The antennae are comb-like, but the females have shorter combs. They emerge twice a year, from early summer to late summer, and are active during the day, but will also fly to lights. They are found in mainland Japan, Taiwan, the Korean peninsula, and China. Adults of the Zygaenidae family, including this species, fly slowly, perhaps because they have body fluids that insectivorous birds and animals shy away from. The larvae feed on the leaves of the Japanese quince and the Japanese quince.

鱗翅目マダラガ科の昆虫。翅の開張4.5cm内外。体翅とも黒く，頭部は赤色。前翅には1本の白帯がある。触角は櫛歯（くしば）状だが，雌では櫛歯が短い。初夏から夏の終りころまでに2回出現し，昼間よく活動するが，灯火にも飛来する。日本本土のほか台湾，朝鮮半島，中国にも分布する。本種に限らずマダラガ科の成虫は，食虫性の鳥獣が敬遠するような体液をもっているためか，飛び方は緩慢である。幼虫はサカキやヒサカキの葉を食べる。
