1228 Circa ‐ 98 Archbishop of Genoa. Born in Varazze near Genoa. Italian name Iacopo da Varazze. The most likely theory is that he was born between 1228 and 1230. He became a Dominican friar, served as Superior of the Lombardy Province, and became Archbishop of Genoa after 1292. He wrote the Golden Legend, a collection of saints' biographies based on the saints' calendar, for the general public. Written in Latin, this book was later significantly expanded and translated into various languages, and also influenced Gothic art. He also wrote a history of Genoa, a collection of sermons, and a treatise on the Mariology. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
