In the strict sense, it is a single-carpelled fruit (strawberry, buttercup), but it often includes multi-carpelled fruits (celery, chrysanthemum). A fruit with a thin pericarp and separate seed coat, such as in the case of Japanese sedge, is called a utricule, while a fruit with a fused pericarp and seed coat, such as in rice, is called a caryopsis.
