Seyakuin Zensou

Japanese: 施薬院全宗 - せやくいんぜんそう
Seyakuin Zensou
Born in 1528 in Omi
[Died] December 10, 1596. A Tendai monk and doctor in Kyoto during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Formerly of the Tamba clan. He was called Tokuunken. He became a monk at a young age and went to Yokokawa to study Tendai doctrine. After Oda Nobunaga burned down Enryaku-ji Temple in 1571, he returned to secular life and became a doctor. He was highly valued by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and became a great doctor, was given the rank of Shoshii (fourth rank), became a monk again, and became a Hoin (a Buddhist priest). He aimed to restore Mount Hiei, and with Hideyoshi's help, he rebuilt Kaidan-in and other temples. He lived at Yakuju-in, where he was given a stipend of 3,000 koku. He was highly revered by the court and common people, and practiced purification. In September 1596, a letter from the Ming Dynasty that sparked Hideyoshi's second invasion of Korea states that Hideyoshi was made king of Japan and Zenso was given the title of commander-in, showing how highly regarded Zenso was at the time.
