Around 1392 - 1450 Italian painter of the Sienese school. His real name was Stefano di Giovanni. He was born in Siena. Little is known about his life, but records indicate that he was active in his hometown between 1425 and 1450. His polyptych (1437-44) for the church of San Francesco in Borgo Sansepolcro continues the tradition of decorative painting in the International Gothic style while incorporating elements of the new Florentine school of painting, creating a mysterious atmosphere in which the real and the unreal worlds are fused together.
