Wonsan - Genzan

It is a city in Gangwon Province, North Korea, facing Yeongheung Bay. In 1949, when Gangwon Province was divided by the 38th parallel, Wonsan was separated from South Hamgyong Province and incorporated into Gangwon Province, making it the political, economic and cultural centre of Gangwon Province. The port is located on the south side of Yeongheung Bay, with the Kalma Peninsula jutting out into the ocean forming a natural breakwater. It was reduced to ruins during the Korean War and rebuilt into a modern city after the war. It is home to many central industrial enterprises, including shipyards and railway factories, as well as educational and cultural institutions. Shotoen Beach, located on the seaside in the northeast of the city, is covered with white sand and has very clear water. The sandy beach on the Kama Peninsula is covered with pine forests, and the scent of blooming bead lilies makes it a famous scenic spot known nationwide as "10 miles of bright sand." It is also a summer resort. Behind Shotoen, the Eastern Park has been constructed.

北朝鮮、江原道(こうげんどう／カンウォンド)にあり、永興(えいこう／ヨンフン)湾に臨む都市。1949年江原道が北緯38度線によって分断されたため、元山市を咸鏡南道(かんきょうなんどう／ハムギョンナムド)から分離して江原道に編入し、江原道の政治、経済、文化の中心地とした。港は永興湾の南側に位置し、海洋側に突き出た葛麻(かつま)半島が自然の防波堤をなしている。朝鮮戦争のとき廃墟(はいきょ)に帰し、戦後近代的な都市に再建された。造船所や鉄道工場など多くの中央工業企業体と教育文化機関がある。市の北東方の海辺にある松濤園(しょうとうえん)海水浴場は白砂に覆われ透明度が高く、葛麻半島の砂浜には松林が茂り、カイドウの咲きにおう「明沙(めいさ)十里」として全国的に知られる屈指の名勝地であり、夏の保養地ともなっている。松濤園の裏側に東方式公園が建設されている。
