A member of the order Sessile, class Gnathopoda, family Barnacleidae. Its shell is white, and is about 1 cm in diameter and height. It lives in inland bays, sometimes even invading brackish waters. It is widely distributed in Europe, but was carried to the Americas on the bottom of a ship during World War I, and spread to the Atlantic coast, and then to the Pacific coast during World War II. In Japan, it was discovered in Ise Bay in the 1950s, and has since spread to the Seto Inland Sea, Kanto region, and the Sea of Japan. The closely related American barnacle A. eburneus is a beautiful white color with a shell diameter and height of about 2 cm. It was discovered in Japan in 1966 on Sado Island. It has since been widely distributed along the coast of the Sea of Japan from Yamagata Prefecture south to Hakata Bay, and has also been confirmed in oyster farms in Hiroshima Bay.
