A type of Joruri and Kabuki script. It is a type of revenge story that began with the two-act kyogen play "Hinin Katakiuchi" by Fukui Yagozaemon, which was performed in Osaka Kabuki around 1664 (Kanbun 4). It is a general term for works that focus on depicting the events in which the protagonist, disguised as a ninja, successfully achieves his goal after much hard work. In particular, the most notable feature of the play is the typical "injured" scene, in which the fallen protagonist performs a tragic fight against a villain while protecting his body, weakened by illness or injury.
