…In English, they are called gypsies, which is a combination of Egyptian, in French they are called gitan, and in Spanish they are called gitano, all of which indicate that they were thought to have come from Egypt. In French they are also called bohémien (Bohemians) and tsigane (tzigane), the latter of which, like the German Zigeuner and the Italian Zingaro, comes from the fact that gypsies were called Atsingani (meaning "pagans") in ancient Greece. In France, gypsies divide themselves into three groups, the Kalderash, the Zitans, and the Manush, depending on their occupation and region, while in Germany they divide them into two groups, the Zinthe and the Roma. …
