Yaita [city] - Yaita
A city in central Tochigi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It occupies the basin of Uchikawa, a tributary of the Naka River, and the southeastern foot of Takaharu Mountain. The district office was established in the city center after the Meiji period, and with the opening of the Tohoku Main Line, it developed as the administrative center of the north of the prefecture and a distribution center for goods. It was a rural city mainly engaged in rice, livestock, and vegetable cultivation, but in 1973 the Tohoku Expressway was opened, an industrial complex was developed, and large electrical equipment companies were attracted, turning it into a rural commercial and industrial city. The foot of Takaharu Mountain is part of Nikko National Park, and there is a large colony of Renge Azalea in Happogahara. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 170.46 km2 . Population: 35,343 (2010).
