Bernstein
American conductor, composer, and pianist. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He studied composition under W. Piston at Harvard University, and conducting under Mitropoulos, F. Reiner, and Koussevitzky. In 1943, he was invited by Rodzinski to become assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and made his debut as a substitute for B. Walter in the same year. Since then, he has been active in Europe and the United States, and after the great success of the musical West Side Story (1957), he became the principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic in 1957, and the following year, he served as music director from 1958 to 1969. After that, in parallel with his composing activities, he continued to guest perform with orchestras and opera houses around the world, including the Vienna Philharmonic, solidifying his reputation. His works include the ballet music Fancy Free (1943-1944), three symphonies (1942, 1949, 1963), the theater piece Mass (1971), and the opera A Quiet Place (1983, revised in 1984), and he continued to write his own unique music by mixing various musical idioms. His books include Questions Without Answers (1976). Bernstein

American film composer. Born in Brooklyn, New York. Graduated from the Juilliard School. Showing talent in a wide range of film music genres, he made his mark with "The Man with the Golden Arm" in 1955 and "The Ten Commandments" in 1956. He composed the music for over 200 films, including "The Magnificent Seven," "To Kill a Mockingbird," "The Great Escape," "Thirty Old Millie," "A Tale of Two Cities," and "Ghostbusters." He served as president of the Screen Composers Guild of America.
