The fact that hydrodynamic lubrication exists inside journal bearings was experimentally discovered in 1883 by the British Beauchamp Tower (1845-1904), and in 1886 it was explained hydrodynamically by O. Reynolds. The theory of hydrodynamic lubrication has since been developed by many researchers, but Reynolds' theory remains the basis for it today. …
