…I means "that" (spiritual being) and "omante" means "to send." In short, Iomante meant a ritual to send off a certain kind of major animal god, which is a spiritual being, to the other world, the world of gods. However, in some regions, the ritual to send off a pet bear (especially a baby bear) is called Iomante, and the ritual to send off a bear god hunted in the mountains is called Kamuy-hopunire. In some regions, the ritual to send off a Blakiston's fish owl, said to be Mosir-kor-kamuy or Kotan-kor-kamuy (god who protects the village), is usually called Mosir-kor-kamuy-hopunire. The ritual of sending off the whales is also called "Iomante," and in many regions the killer whale god, known as "Repun Kamuy (God in the Offshore Sea)," is considered the most important of the sea gods.

…iは〈それ＝霊的存在＝神〉の意，omanteが〈行かしめる〉の意で，端的にいえば，イオマンテは霊的存在である特定の種類の主要な動物の神を他界＝神の世界へと送り届ける儀礼を意味した。しかし，飼熊(とくに子熊)の神を送る儀礼のことを〈イオマンテ〉，山で狩りした〈キムンカムイkim‐un‐kamuy＝山にいる神〉すなわち熊神を送る儀礼を〈カムイホプニレkamuy‐hopunire〉と呼んで区別する地方もあり，〈モシリコルカムイmosir‐kor‐kamuy〉または〈コタンコルカムイkotan‐kor‐kamuy＝コタン(里)を守る神〉と言われるシマフクロウの神を送る儀礼のことを通例〈モシリコルカムイ･ホプニレmosir‐kor‐kamuy‐hopunire〉と言う地方なども知られている。また，クジラ送りの儀礼も〈イオマンテ〉と言われているが，多くの地方では〈レプンカムイrep‐un‐kamuy＝沖にいる神〉と呼ばれるシャチ神が海の神々のうちもっとも重視されている。…
