Gishu

A town in Uiju County in the west of North Pyongan Province, North Korea. The county seat. It is located on the left bank of the Yalu River, 18km upstream from Sinuiju. During the Goryeo Dynasty, it was the center of the border area of ​​Pyongan Province, where a checkpoint and a mokjin were located, and during the Yi Dynasty, it was the center of the border area of ​​Pyongan Province, where a government office was located. The north side of the town overlooks China's Jiuliancheng and Oryongsan, and it is surrounded by hills, making it a natural fortress, and an international gateway to China. The opening of the Gyeongui Line and the relocation of the provincial seat to Sinuiju (1924) put a stop to development.

北朝鮮、平安北道(へいあんほくどう／ピョンアンプクド)西部の義州郡にある邑(ゆう)（町）。郡の所在地。新義州から18キロメートル上流の鴨緑江(おうりょくこう)左岸にある。高麗(こうらい)時代は関防や牧鎮を置き、李朝(りちょう)時代は府を置いた平安道の国境地帯の中心地であった。邑の北側は中国の九連城や五竜山を望み、周囲は丘陵で囲まれた天然の要塞(ようさい)地で、対中国の国際関門であった。京義線の開通と、道所在地の新義州への移転（1924）のため、発展の道がとだえた。
