Bessarion, Johannes
Born: circa 1400, Trebizond
Died November 19, 1472. A humanist and theologian from Ravenna Bishopric. Later he was called Basileus. He became Archbishop of Nicaea in 1437. He attended the Council of Ferrara and Florence, which attempted to unite the Eastern and Western Churches, but his opinion in favor of union was rejected by the Byzantine Church. He remained in Italy, converted to Catholicism, and was appointed cardinal in 1439. In addition to his main work, In calumniatorem Platonis (Against the Defamers of Plato), he also translated Aristotle's Metaphysics and Xenophon's Reminiscences of Socrates into Latin. The oldest Homeric manuscript handed down today is from his library.
