Heat insulating brick

Japanese: 断熱煉瓦 - だんねつれんが（英語表記）heat insulating brick

These bricks are used on the outside of firebricks on the inside of various kilns, chimneys, boilers, etc. to prevent heat from escaping from the furnace walls. They are made of diatomaceous earth and are fired at 700-800°C, while some are made by adding wood-bush clay to diatomaceous earth and firing at 900-1300°C. The Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) classify them into insulating bricks (maximum safe use temperature 850-1200°C) and insulating fireproof bricks (same 1300-1500°C). The thermal conductivity of the former is 0.14-0.17 kcal/m・h・°C or less, and that of the latter is 0.18-0.35 kcal/m・h・°C or less.

各種窯炉，煙突，ボイラーなどの内面の耐火煉瓦の外側に積んで，炉壁からの熱の放散を防止するために使用する煉瓦。材質はケイ藻土が用いられ 700～800℃に焼成されたもの，またケイ藻土に木節粘土を加えて 900～1300℃に焼成したものがある。日本工業規格JISでは断熱煉瓦 (最高安全使用温度 850～1200℃) と耐火断熱煉瓦 (同 1300～1500℃) に区分している。熱伝導率は，前者で 0.14～0.17 kcal/m・h・ ℃以下，後者で 0.18～0.35 kcal/m・h・ ℃以下である。
