French actress. Born in Paris. While working as a magazine cover girl, she met and married R. Vadim (they later divorced). After appearing in R. Clair's La vie en vie (1955), she gained huge popularity with her husband Vadim's La vie en vie (1956). A sex symbol of the 1950s and 1960s, she was affectionately nicknamed BB (which means "baby" in French). She displayed a strong personality not through her acting but through her physical presence, and her private life was also a topic of conversation. Other films she appeared in include M. Boisrond's La vie en vie (1959), J. Cocteau's La Testament de Orpheus (1960), L. Malle's La vie en vie (1962), and J. L. Godard's Contempt (1963). After retiring from filmmaking after Vadim's Don Juan (1973), he devoted himself to animal rights activism.
