Louis Moréri

He was a Frenchman and a learned man who was a Catholic priest. His career is unclear, but in 1674 he wrote Le Grand dictionnaire historique, ou le mélange currieux de l'histoire sacrée et profane, which was the first to arrange famous and especially rare items in alphabetical order. It was well received because it was easier to search than the traditional classifications, and after his death in 1759, a 20th edition was published, consisting of 10 volumes compiled by Provet. V. Hugo used this dictionary often in his historical novels. The French Protestant philosopher Bayle also wrote three volumes of Dictionnaire historique et critique in 1697, following the example of Morelli's Le Grand dictionnaire historique et critique.

フランス人で、カトリックの僧職にあった博学の人。経歴は明らかでないが1674年に『歴史辞典―聖俗歴史の奇事雑纂(ざっさん)』Le Grand dictionnaire historique, ou le mélange currieux de l'histoire sacrée et profaneを著し、著名な事項、ことに珍しい事項を取り入れ、アルファベット順に初めて配列した。従来の分類によるものより捜しやすいので喜ばれ、彼の死後1759年には20版が発行されたが、これはプロベProvet編10巻であった。V・ユゴーは歴史小説にこの事典を多く用いている。また、フランスのプロテスタント哲学者ベールはモレリの『歴史辞典』に倣って、1697年に『歴史的批評的辞典』Dictionnaire historique et critique三巻を著した。
