An 18th-century French philosopher. His birth and death years, as well as his life, are unknown. Born around 1715, he became involved in high society after his career as a teacher, and is said to have spent about three years in Prussia. In his early works he preached an educational philosophy based on sensationalism, but in the 1750s his ideas became more radical and utopian. In his long poem of 14 songs, The Disaster of the Floating Island, or Basiliad (published anonymously in 1753), he sang of a society of perfect equality, and in his Code de la nature (published anonymously in 1754), he provided a theoretical justification for Basiliad, criticized private ownership as being contrary to "the harmony of God," and developed a vision of a rational, optimistic communist society based on collective education and free of all luxury.
