1664‐1731 A representative metalworker of the Baroque period. Born in Biberach near Ulm, Germany. In 1693 he moved to Dresden to serve Elector Augustus II, and in 1698 was appointed court jeweller. He inherited the metalworking techniques established by Jamnitzer and Cellini, and showed a style closer to the works of Mannerists than to the Baroque. He showed outstanding talent in exotic themes such as ancient Egypt, using intricate decorative techniques of cloisonné and jewellery.
