The Buddha's Body Theory

Japanese: 仏身論 - ぶっしんろん

An ontology of Buddha that discusses the essence of the existence of Buddha and how it develops as a phenomenon. After the death of Shakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, the idea that the essence of Buddha is the "dharmakaya" arose in some sects during the period of Hinayana Buddhism, based on the belief that Shakyamuni/Buddha as a historical figure never returned to nothingness, but entered into the truth of the universe or the law (dharma) as a spiritual principle. In Mahayana Buddhism, speculation on the Buddha's body deepened, and the "theory of the three bodies," which establishes three types of Buddha's body, was eventually established by Nagarjuna of the Madhyamaka school, and by Maitreya, Asabang, and Vasubandhu of the Yogacara school.

仏陀という存在の本質は何か，それはまた現象としてどのように展開してくるかを論ずる，仏陀に関する存在論。仏教の開祖釈迦の死後，歴史的人物としての釈迦＝仏陀は決して無に帰したのではなく，宇宙の真理，あるいは精神の原理としての法(ダルマdharma)に帰入したのだという信仰から，仏陀の本質は〈法身〉であるという考えが，すでに部派仏教の時期にいくつかの部派の中でおこった。大乗仏教になって仏身に関する思索が深まり，中観派の竜樹，さらには瑜伽行派の弥勒(マイトレーヤ)，無著，世親らの論師たちによって最終的に3種の仏身をたてる〈三身説〉が成立した。
