An old city in the Amakusa Islands of Kumamoto Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It straddles the Amakusa Kamishima and Shimoshima islands across the Hondo Seto Strait. The central town on the northeast coast of Shimoshima was once the castle town of the Amakusa clan, and is served by boat from Minamata and buses from Kumamoto, making it the transportation, economic and tourist hub of Amakusa. In addition to rice cultivation, the town produces a lot of ponkan oranges, and also raises livestock, sea bream, prawns and yellowtail. Horizontally yaki pottery is a specialty. As it was a center for Christian missionary work, there are many ruins of the area. Amakusa Airport was completed in March 2000. In March 2006, Ushibuka City merged with the towns of Ariake, Goshoura, Kuratake, Sumimoto, Shinwa, Itsuwa, Amakusa and Kawaura in Amakusa County to form the city of Amakusa. Area: 144.69 km2 . Population: 40,429 (2003). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
