Yokaren - Yokaren

Japanese: 予科練 - よかれん

Abbreviation for Naval Aviation Preparatory School Trainee of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Established in 1930 at Kasumigaura Airfield (Ibaraki Prefecture) with the aim of training a large number of pilots. At the end of the Pacific War, they trained members of the Special Attack Force. There were three types of exams: Class A, which was taken by those with the academic ability of a fourth year of junior high school; Class B, which was selected from those with the academic ability of a high school graduate and recognized as particularly outstanding; and Class C, which was selected from non-commissioned officers. The ages of both Class A and Class B were 14 to 15 years old. The training period was about three years, during which students received basic education in general studies and military science, and after completion, they were transferred to the regular flight trainee course.

旧日本海軍の海軍飛行予科練習生の略。航空機搭乗員の大量養成をねらいとして，1930年霞ヶ浦飛行場 (茨城県) に開設。太平洋戦争末期には特攻隊要員の訓練を行なった。中学4年程度の学力のある者が受験した甲種，高等小学校卒業程度の学力のある者のなかから特に優秀と認められた者を選抜した乙種，下士官のなかから選抜した丙種の3つに分けられ，甲種，乙種の年齢はともに 14～15歳。教育期間は約3年，その間に普通学と軍事学の基礎教育を受け，終了後は正規の飛行練習生のコースへ編入された。
