Republic of Mordovia (English spelling)
A republic within the Russian Federation. Before the breakup of the Soviet Union, it was the Autonomous Republic of Moldova within the Russian Republic, but in 1991 it was declared a republic and renamed the Republic of Moldova. It has an area of ​​26,200 km2 and a population of 963,500 (1989). Its capital is Saransk (population 312,000). It is located in the mid-eastern part of European Russia, on the middle reaches of the Volga River, and borders the Chuvash Republic in the northeast. The eastern part is a gently sloping hilly region with an elevation of about 300 m, and the western part is a plain extending down to the Oka River.
