The British royal family had been interested in black music and performing arts for a long time, and as early as the 1850s, Queen Victoria invited the group Juba, known as the "kings of dancing," to the royal court. Black entertainer Bert Williams performed the cakewalk at the royal court before World War I, and in 1919, W. Marion Cook's black band, which introduced jazz to Europe, also performed before the throne.
