Japanese: カゴノキ - かごのき

It is an evergreen medium-to-large tree of the Lauraceae family, growing to a height of 10-15m and a diameter of 30-40cm; larger trees can reach a height of 20m and a diameter of over 1m. The bark peels off in round flakes, and the old black-brown areas and the new pale yellow-white areas form a kanoko pattern, hence the Japanese name "kanoko no ki" (kanoko tree). The leaves are alternate, with the leaf blades 5-10cm long and oblong, with the entire edges and undersides tinged with grayish white. Dioecious. The flowers are small yellow flowers that bloom in August and September in clusters in the leaf axils. The fruit is an obovate berry about 7mm in diameter that ripens red in July and August of the following year and contains one seed.

高さ10～15m，直径30～40cmほどのクスノキ科の常緑中高木で，大きいものは高さ20m，直径1m以上になることがある。樹皮が円い薄片状にはげ落ち，古い黒褐色の部分と新しい淡黄白色の部分が鹿の子まだらをなすので〈鹿子の木〉の和名がある。葉は互生し，葉身は長さ5～10cmの長楕円形で，全縁，裏面は灰白色を帯びる。雌雄異株。花は黄色の小花で，8,9月ころ葉腋（ようえき）に数個が密生して咲く。果実は直径約7mmの倒卵形の液果で，翌年の7,8月に紅色に熟し，1個の種子を含む。
