Japanese: 婦人兵 - ふじんへい（英語表記）woman soldier

Throughout history, there are many examples of women who have played an active role in wars and battles. For example, Greek legend tells of a female Amazon warrior who fought under the leadership of Queen Penthesilea. Another famous example is Joan of Arc, who fought in the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) in England and France. From then until the present day, there have been many examples of women fighting bravely, but most of these were unorganized actions in which women volunteered to fight out of patriotic passion. However, when World War I broke out, Britain and Russia began to systematically recruit women volunteers in addition to the existing volunteer soldiers, and some participated in rear-line support duties and in some cases on the front lines of battle.

歴史上，婦人が戦争または戦闘で活躍した事例は少なくない。たとえばギリシア伝説では女王ペンテシレイアに率いられて戦ったアマゾンの女武者の伝承がある。また，イギリス，フランスの百年戦争(1337‐1453)のジャンヌ･ダルクは有名である。以後現代にいたるまで婦人が勇敢に戦った例は数多いが，ほとんどは愛国的情熱から志願して戦う非組織的な行動であった。しかし，第1次大戦が起きるとイギリス，ロシアでは従前の義勇兵のほかに婦人志願兵の募集が組織的に行われ，後方支援業務や一部では第一線の戦いに参加した。
